Technology History | Apple — The Garage at 2066 Crist Drive

People look for the first Apple Computer in a Cupertino atrium or a glass ring.
The partnership was signed here, at the Jobs family house at 2066 Crist Drive in Los Altos, on 1 April 1976.
Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne formed Apple Computer as a partnership that day. Wayne sold his ten percent back eleven days later.
The workroom was the garage of a 1951 ranch house. Jobs's adoptive parents had moved into it in 1968. The house is still a private dwelling. Los Altos listed it as a Historic Resource in 2013. Photograph from the sidewalk. Do not walk onto the lot.
Wozniak had already built the machine that became the Apple I. The garage was where boards were assembled, boxed and sold, not where the circuit was first drawn.
The first fifty Apple I boards went to the Byte Shop in Mountain View at five hundred dollars each, wholesale. Jobs wanted a finished product a shop could put on a shelf. That demand is what pushed the next machine, the Apple II, out of this driveway and into a real factory.
Apple Computer, Inc. was incorporated on 3 January 1977. The garage belongs to the partnership year, not to the corporation.
What you can still see from Crist Drive is a wood garage door on a quiet street. The mechanism is ordinary: a house that would let three people work without rent.
