People treat Chevron as a Houston tower and a California star that arrived already named after a chevron.
The first commercially successful oil well in the Western United States was completed here, at Pico No. 4 in Pico Canyon, west of Newhall, on 26 September 1876.
Driller Charles Alexander Mentry, working for Demetrius Scofield's California Star Oil Works, took the hole to about 300 feet after three earlier attempts had failed. The well flowed about 30 barrels a day, then more after it was deepened with a steam rig.
Pacific Coast Oil Company, incorporated in San Francisco on 19 February 1879, bought California Star that September. Scofield later became the first president of Standard Oil Company of California.
A two-inch line ran from the canyon to a Newhall refinery, then toward the bay. Standard of California took the Pacific Coast name into the 20th century and restyled itself Chevron in 1977.
The well produced for 114 years and was capped in 1990. The first commercial strike sat in this canyon.
