People treat Royal Caribbean as a PortMiami tower that always sent Oasis-class hulls from a Liberian holding company.
The first book was three Norwegian owners and a Miami hotelier who wanted purpose-built Caribbean ships, not leftover Atlantic liners.
In 1968 Edwin Stephan enlisted Anders Wilhelmsen, I. M. Skaugen, and Gotaas-Larsen.
They formed Royal Caribbean Cruise Line in 1969.
The first office was a trailer on Biscayne Boulevard that would now fit inside one conference room of the present headquarters.
Song of Norway, about 18,000 gross tons and built for about 800 passengers, left Miami on her maiden voyage on 7 November 1970.
Two sister ships followed within two years.
The hulls were drawn with shallow drafts so they could berth at small island quays, and with the cantilevered Viking Crown lounge that became the line's silhouette.
In 1988 Ted Arison's Carnival tried to buy the two partners who wanted out.
The Wilhelmsen brothers used a contractual pre-emption and raised about 577 million dollars with the Pritzker family to keep the book.
The 1997 purchase of Celebrity created the listed parent now called Royal Caribbean Group.
The pin is PortMiami, where the first ship cleared and where the group still berths.
The mechanism is a purpose-built cruise hull sold as the destination, financed by Norwegian shipping houses that already knew how to order a ship.
