People treat Palo Alto Networks as the Santa Clara campus at 3000 Tannery Way that always sold a next-generation firewall and a cloud console.
The first book was a resignation and a rented desk.
In early 2005 Nir Zuk left Juniper Networks, giving up unvested stock, and moved into a small Mountain View apartment after Check Point, OneSecure, and NetScreen had each stopped inventing the box he wanted.
Greylock and Sequoia put up a 250,000-dollar seed in 2005 dollars. Zuk worked from Greylock rooms with Asheem Chandna and Jim Goetz and spent months asking buyers what a firewall still could not see.
The answer was the application, not the port. A legacy box treated port 80 as the web. The new box read the session and decided which program was talking.
Palo Alto Networks was founded in 2005. The first appliances shipped to replace the old perimeter, not to sit behind it. The company listed on 20 July 2012 and raised about 260 million dollars in 2012 money.
The mechanism is still the apartment one.
Once software stopped living on one port, a packet filter that only knew numbers could not write a policy a security team would sign. The next box had to name the program.
