People treat Kia as a Yangjae design studio that arrived already named Telluride.
The first Korean plant that could stamp, paint, and assemble a complete car opened here, at Soha-dong in what is now Gwangmyeong, in June 1973.
The company is older than the line.
Kim Chul-ho registered Kyungsung Precision Industry in Dorim-dong, Yeongdeungpo, on 11 December 1944, to machine bicycle parts.
The firm took the name Kia Industry in 1951 or 1952.
Kia, in the characters he chose, meant rising from Asia.
Bicycles came first, then the C-100 motorcycle and the K-360 three-wheeler in 1962.
Sohari was the jump from three wheels to four.
Ground was broken on 10 November 1970 on about 200,000 pyeong.
When the plant opened it was the first integrated automobile factory in the country, rated at 25,000 vehicles a year.
The Brisa S-1000 followed in 1974.
A Brisa pickup went to Qatar in 1975, the firm's first export car.
Seoul later ordered Kia out of passenger cars in 1981, then let the company back in 1986 to build the Ford Festiva for export.
Pride, Avella, Carnival and K9 all ran on this lot.
After the 1998 receivership the works stayed inside the Hyundai Motor Group.
The same ground now holds Autoland Gwangmyeong and, since 2024, the Gwangmyeong EVO electric line.
The public address is 113 Kia-ro.
The pin is the plant gate on that road.
The shops inside are an active factory.
