People treat Booking Holdings as a Norwalk tower that always owned Booking.com.
The listed company began as a Stamford bidding desk called Priceline.
In 1997 Jay S. Walker launched priceline.com with a Name Your Own Price service for airline seats.
The company's own chronology dates that launch to 1997 and records the 31 March 1999 initial public offering.
That first-day market value, in the same official timeline, was 12.9 billion dollars in 1999 dollars.
Walker later left the board.
The firm tried groceries, gasoline, mortgages and cars under the same bidding model and dropped those lines in 2000.
In September 2004 it bought Active Hotels.
In July 2005 it bought Booking.com for 133 million dollars in 2005 dollars and folded the two European hotel sites together.
Agoda followed in 2007, Kayak in 2013, OpenTable in 2014.
The parent renamed itself The Priceline Group in 2014 and Booking Holdings on 21 February 2018, when the ticker moved from PCLN to BKNG.
The long-running headquarters is 800 Connecticut Avenue in Norwalk.
Hearst Connecticut Media photographed that building when the name change was announced and recorded the promise to stay in the city.
