People treat Autodesk as a San Francisco design-software house that always sold Revit and Maya.
The first company was sixteen programmers in Marin County.
On 30 January 1982 John Walker held the organizing meeting at his house in Mill Valley. The working paper mailed two weeks earlier had called the partnership Marin Software Partners.
The principals each put in a minimum of three thousand dollars in 1982 money, or hardware counted against that stake. Combined seed was about sixty thousand dollars.
They showed a CAD prototype and an office suite at the West Coast Computer Faire on 19 March 1982, using a booth Marinchip had already paid for. The California Secretary of State rejected several names. The corporation filed as Autodesk on 26 April 1982.
The first rented rooms were at 150 Shoreline Highway, Building B. AutoCAD went on sale in December 1982 and brought in 1.4 million dollars in its first year. Walker later said the firm was profitable from the first month and took no outside capital.
Headquarters moved to Sausalito in 1984 and to San Rafael in 1994. The product that survived was not the text editor they also demoed at Comdex that November. Architects and engineers bought the drafting program instead.
The mechanism was microcomputer CAD sold to people who could not afford a minicomputer seat. A sixty-thousand-dollar partnership put a drawing board on an IBM PC.
The house on Saint Jude Road is private. The standing pin is the first Shoreline Highway office block beside Richardson Bay.
