People treat Kroger as a national chain that was always headquartered in a glass tower.
The first counter was two blocks south, and the street is gone.
In 1883 Bernard H. Barney Kroger, then twenty-three, put 372 dollars of his own money with 350 dollars from B. A. Branagan and rented a storefront at 66 East Pearl Street in Cincinnati.
Pearl Street ran between Second and Third. Fort Washington Way later wiped the block. The first rooms sold tea, coffee, flour, and canned goods under the name Great Western Tea Company.
A flood in 1884 ruined that shop. Kroger opened another. By 1890 the city directory listed seven downtown stores. In 1901 the firm baked its own bread, which cut the baker's margin out of the loaf. In 1902 it incorporated as the Kroger Grocery and Baking Company with forty stores and 1.75 million dollars in sales that year.
The living marker is 1014 Vine Street. Wyatt C. Hedrick's International Style tower opened in 1959 and still holds the executive offices of The Kroger Co.
From this block the company kept its legal seat in Cincinnati while it became the largest American supermarket operator by revenue among the S&P 500 grocers.
The first address cannot be photographed. The tower can. The prose has to carry both: the vanished Pearl Street rent, and the Vine Street house that refused to leave town.
