People treat Cisco as a San Jose campus that arrived already routing the internet.
The first routers the company sold were built here, in Len Bosack and Sandy Lerner's house in Atherton, after they incorporated cisco Systems on 10 December 1984.
Bosack ran the computer-science lab at Stanford. Lerner ran the business-school machines five hundred yards away. They wanted the two networks to talk. Stanford would not license the campus "Blue Box" to them. They mortgaged the house, ran up credit cards, and used spare bedrooms as office and lab. When boards started shipping, the living-room carpet — newly laid white wool — became the assembly floor. Employee No. 4's first day was in that house. Sequoia put in $2 million in 1987. The AGS shipped in 1986. The founders were gone by 1990, after the IPO.
The house is still a house. It is not Tasman Drive. It is the first address the corporation ran from.
