Industry History | FANUC — The Factory Forest at the Foot of Fuji
kevin
People treat FANUC as a robotics ticker that lives on a Tokyo trading screen.
The machines are built in a village under Mount Fuji.
Numerical control work began in 1955 as a project team inside Fuji Tsushinki, later Fujitsu. Seiuemon Inaba ran that team. In 1956 the group produced Japan's first commercial NC and servo package. On 12 May 1972 the unit spun out as Fujitsu Fanuc Ltd., capitalized at two billion yen.
The company did not stay in the city. In 1980 it put a robot and machine-tool plant at Oshino in Yamanashi Prefecture. Headquarters followed from Hino, Tokyo, in 1983 and 1984. The address is 3580 Shibokusa, Oshino-mura. The campus now covers about 1.78 million square metres of forest at the foot of Fuji, with the CNC, servo, robot, and robomachine shops scattered through the trees.
The mechanism is concentration. Inaba kept design, machining, and assembly on one hillside so that the robots that leave Oshino are first used to build the next robots. A 1981 showcase plant on this ground was run by about a hundred people on work that would otherwise have needed five hundred.
Oshino is a public village, not a sealed campus in the American sense. The gates and the yellow buildings are visible from the approach roads that also serve Lake Yamanaka. The company still states that it does not terminate support for a FANUC product while a customer is using it.
FANUC Corporation, the Nikkei 225 name, remains headquartered at this pin. The mountain is the landmark. The factory forest is the fact.
