People treat Olympus as a Hachioji medical-device campus that always made endoscopes.
The first product was a microscope.
On 12 October 1919 Takeshi Yamashita founded Takachiho Seisakusho in Hatagaya, Shibuya, Tokyo, with capital of 300,000 yen.
The First World War had cut Japan off from German microscopes.
Yamashita, backed by Tokiwa Shokai after a year in the trading house, set out to make them at home.
Kenzaburo Kawakami sat as honorary president.
Shintaro Terada was chief engineer.
The appointment letter dated the founding day is the oldest surviving company paper.
Takachiho is a Japanese mountain paired, in the firm's telling, with Mount Olympus.
The English trademark Olympus was registered in February 1921.
The Asahi 600x microscope went on sale in March 1920.
Thermometers were an early sideline and were later dropped so the shop could concentrate on optics.
The first camera, the Semi-Olympus I with a Zuiko lens, appeared in September 1936.
The gastrocamera work that became the medical franchise started after the war.
The company renamed itself Takachiho Optical in 1942, Olympus Optical in 1949, and Olympus Corporation in 2003.
Headquarters stayed at 2-43-2 Hatagaya until the 2016 move to 2951 Ishikawa-machi, Hachioji.
The Hatagaya block is still the founding pin.
