People treat HCA Healthcare as the tower at One Park Plaza that always ran a national hospital book.
The first office was a small house next to one hospital.
In 1968 Dr. Thomas Frist Sr., his son Dr. Thomas Frist Jr., and Jack C. Massey formed Hospital Corporation of America in Nashville. Massey had already sold Kentucky Fried Chicken. The Frists brought the medical practice.
The original rooms stood on 25th Avenue North near Patterson Street, beside Park View Hospital, the first facility in the chain. Park View's campus is now TriStar Centennial Medical Center.
HCA was one of the first investor-owned hospital companies in the United States. The model was to buy or build community hospitals, centralize purchasing and billing, and leave clinical work on the floor.
A Metropolitan Nashville historical marker, number 162, was placed at the house site in 2018 for the fiftieth year. The present headquarters at One Park Plaza is a short walk south of that corner.
The mechanism was treating a hospital as a repeatable operating unit. Three founders used one Nashville house and one neighboring hospital as the template for a chain, rather than a single teaching campus.
The house is gone. The pin is the marked lot on 25th Avenue North, where interviews for the early staff were still held in a residential room.
