Retail History | eBay — AuctionWeb at 2005 Hamilton Avenue

People treat eBay as a North First Street campus and a Buy It Now button that arrived already global.
The first leased rooms sat here, in a dentist-office-sized suite on the second floor of 2005 Hamilton Avenue in San Jose's Willow Glen.
Pierre Omidyar launched AuctionWeb over Labor Day weekend in 1995 from a home connection. The site went live in early September. The first completed sale was a broken laser pointer that closed at 14.83 dollars in 1995 currency.
A later press story said the site began so that a fiancee could trade Pez dispensers. The company's own chronology later called that story a fabrication. The early listings were mostly computer hardware.
Traffic forced the internet provider to move him onto a business account. Jeff Skoll joined as president in 1996. Temporary space at the NASA Ames incubator in Sunnyvale came first. The Hamilton Avenue suite was the first ordinary office they could hold.
The 1998 contact page still listed eBay Inc. at 2005 Hamilton Ave., Suite 270, San Jose, CA 95125. The Greylands Business Park around that address became the South Campus. Headquarters later shifted a block to 2025 Hamilton Avenue.
AuctionWeb took the eBay name in September 1997 after Echo Bay, Omidyar's consulting label. Shares began trading on Nasdaq on 24 September 1998. PayPal left the same campus when the companies separated in 2015.
The campus is an office park from 1983, not a garage. What started on a thirty-dollar home account had to leave the house when the bill hit 250 dollars a month.
