Finance History | MUFG — The First Brick Office in Marunouchi

People treat Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group as a holding company that arrived already occupying a glass tower over Tokyo Station.
The first Western office on this block was red brick.
In 1880 Yataro Iwasaki, founder of the Mitsubishi group, opened the Mitsubishi Exchange House in Tokyo as a money-changing desk. That house was the banking seed of what became Mitsubishi Bank in 1919 and, after the 1996 merger with the Bank of Tokyo and the 2005 combination with UFJ, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group.
The pin is the rebuilt Mitsubishi Ichigokan at 2-6-2 Marunouchi. Josiah Conder designed the original Queen Anne brick office, finished in 1894, as the first Western-style office building in the district Mitsubishi was then laying out as a London Block of red halls.
The 1894 house held Mitsubishi offices. It was demolished in 1968. The present museum, opened on 6 April 2010, was rebuilt on the same footprint from the old drawings and sits in Marunouchi Brick Square.
MUFG's registered head office is now at 7-1 Marunouchi 2-chome, a short walk north. The banking group still dates the Mitsubishi line to the 1880 exchange house and to this first brick office on the block the zaibatsu bought from the army.
The museum is public. The garden faces the entrance. The archive room inside keeps the Marunouchi story on paper.
