People treat Tyson as a Springdale campus that always packed chicken under a red label.
The first book was a truck that hauled live birds north.
In 1931 John W. Tyson moved his family to Springdale with a battered truck, half a load of hay and a nickel.
He hauled hay, fruit and chickens for local growers after the fruit orchards failed.
By 1935 he was running coops to Kansas City and St. Louis, nailing crates to a trailer and feeding the birds in transit so the haul could go farther.
In 1936 he borrowed $1,000, added $800 of his own, and drove 500 spring chickens to Chicago.
The trip cleared $235 in 1936 dollars.
He wired most of it home to pay debt and buy the next load.
When chicks and feed ran short he opened a hatchery and a mill.
On 6 March 1943 he bought the old Springdale Produce building at 319 East Emma Avenue for $3,250.
In October 1947 he incorporated Tyson Feed and Hatchery with that address as the principal office.
The first processing plant on the north side of town cost about $90,000 in the late 1950s.
The public name became Tyson's Foods in 1963.
A later campus rose on what is now Don Tyson Parkway.
The Emma Avenue lot later held the Tyson Emma technology building on the same downtown block.
The mechanism that survived is vertical control: own the chick, the feed, the truck and the plant so a Springdale bird can be sold in Chicago without waiting on someone else's hatchery.
