People treat S and P Global as a Water Street data tower that always published the 500.
The first product was a book about railroads.
In 1860 Henry Varnum Poor published History of the Railroads and Canals of the United States, a compilation of operating and financial facts for investors who had none.
In 1868 he and his son Henry William Poor began the annual Poor's Manual of the Railroads of the United States.
The company's own history dates the firm from that 1860 volume.
In 1941 Poor's Publishing merged with Standard Statistics to form Standard and Poor's Corp.
McGraw-Hill bought the rating house in 1966.
The parent later dropped the textbook businesses, took the name McGraw Hill Financial, and in 2016 rebranded as S and P Global.
Headquarters is 55 Water Street in Lower Manhattan, the 1972 Emery Roth tower that Standard and Poor's leased in volume in the 1990s and that the parent occupied as its main office from 2015.
