People treat BlackRock as Hudson Yards glass that arrived already named Aladdin and the world's largest book of assets.
The first room was here, at 345 Park Avenue, under the Blackstone name.
On 9 March 1988 Larry Fink, Robert Kapito, Susan Wagner, Barbara Novick, Bennett Golub, Hugh Frater, Ralph Schlosstein and Keith Anderson started a fixed-income shop built around the risk systems Fink had wanted after a First Boston mortgage desk lost about a hundred million dollars in 1986. Peter Peterson of Blackstone put up the seed capital. The unit opened as Blackstone Financial Management. Blackstone itself took two floors in this Rudin tower the same year.
The eight people sat in a single room and sold an Income Trust. In 1992 the name changed to BlackRock to stop the confusion with the parent. The firm listed on the New York Stock Exchange on 1 October 1999 at fourteen dollars a share. Aladdin, the risk platform written for the book, was sold to other managers from that decade on.
345 Park Avenue fills the block between Park and Lexington, 51st and 52nd. Emery Roth & Sons finished the 44-storey International Style tower in 1969. Blackstone is still in the building. BlackRock later kept offices on East 52nd Street and then at Hudson Yards. The first desks were not there. They were in this Park Avenue room, on Blackstone's floor.
