People treat Honda as a Tokyo headquarters and a Suzuka circuit that arrived already making cars.
The first plant that carried the work was a modest wooden building put up on scorched ground at Yamashita-cho 30 in Hamamatsu — now 2-1 Yamashita-cho, Chuo-ku — in late summer 1946.
Soichiro Honda had sold the remains of Tokai Seiki to Toyota after the air raids and the Mikawa earthquake. He called the new shop the Honda Technical Research Institute. Inside were a few belt-driven lathes. Outside were ten machine tools. The sign at the entrance used the research-institute name. There were twelve or thirteen people.
Honda Motor Co., Ltd. was incorporated on 24 September 1948 at Itaya-machi in the same city, capital one million yen, thirty-four employees including the president. There was no founding ceremony. The plant sign did not change. They were absorbed in the work.
The first product line was not a car. It was a bicycle auxiliary engine built from surplus generator motors, then the Honda A-Type, then the Dream D-Type motorcycle of 1949. The Yamashita shop is the lot the later Hamamatsu Factory still treats as the birthplace.
