People treat Hoya as a Nishi-Shinjuku med-tech listing that always sold an eyeglass lens and a semiconductor mask blank.
The first book was a glass melt in a town that gave the company its name.
On 1 November 1941 Shoichi Yamanaka and his brother Shigeru opened Toyo Optical Glass Manufacturing at Shimohoya 801, Hoya-machi, Kita-Tama, Tokyo Prefecture.
The brothers had been papermakers.
Wartime demand for domestic optical glass pulled them into a furnace they had not run before.
After two years of failed melts they finished a new crucible in March 1943 and poured Hoya BK7.
The town is now Nishitokyo.
The founding shed is gone.
The corporate register dates from 23 August 1944, when the works became a company.
Defeat cut the military order book.
The same furnace turned to crystal tableware cut by Edo kiriko hands, then to spectacle lenses, contact lenses, endoscope glass, and the blanks that sit under a chip-mask writer.
Hoya listed in Tokyo on 2 October 1961.
Pentax was folded in after a 2007 bid, which is why an endoscope and a camera body now share a ledger with a lens.
The pin is Shimohoya 2-8, the block that replaced 801 banchi, not the later Shinjuku tower.
A company named for a vanished town is the honest frame.
The mechanism is a paper house that learned to melt optical glass when the state could no longer import it, then kept the melt after the state no longer needed gunsights.
