People treat SK Telecom as a chaebol wireless brand that was always private and always named SK.
The first charter was a state mobile company under Korea Telecom.
On 29 March 1984 Korea Mobile Telecommunications Services Corp. was incorporated. Car phones and pagers went on sale that spring. The name shortened to Korea Mobile Telecommunications Corp. in May 1988, when handheld cellular service began in the Seoul basin.
Nationwide coverage was finished in 1991. A million subscribers were on the books by December of that year. In April 1993 the government, acting through the same company, adopted CDMA as the national digital standard.
The mechanism was a state monopoly that later sold the monopoly. SK Group, then Sunkyong, became the largest shareholder in June 1994 under a privatization tender. The company joined the group in January 1997 and took the name SK Telecom that March.
In January 1996 Korea Mobile launched commercial cdmaOne service in Incheon and Bucheon, the first such network in regular use anywhere. Other operators arrived the same year. The monopoly was over. In January 2002 SK Telecom absorbed Shinsegi Telecom, its first licensed rival.
The present headquarters is SK T-Tower at 65 Eulji-ro in Jung-gu, occupied from December 2004. The upper floors lean about fifteen degrees toward the street, a gesture the company compared to an open folder phone. The 1984 rooms were not in this shaft.
