People treat Amgen as a Dow component and a campus that arrived already covering a hundred acres.
The corporation was filed here, in Thousand Oaks, California, on 8 April 1980.
Three pages went to Secretary of State March Fong Eu on behalf of William K. Bowes Jr. and Winston Salser. The name on the papers was Applied Molecular Genetics, shortened in use to AMGen.
The first rooms were a shared industrial building later called Building 1, in the Rancho Conejo park just off the 101. The starting staff was three. George Rathmann, named president that October, worked from a trailer in the parking lot so the scientists could keep the floor.
The early brief was recombinant DNA, including human insulin. On 17 June 1983 the company sold two million common shares and raised nearly 40 million dollars in 1983 currency. Epogen, the first big product, reached the market in 1989.
The present address is One Amgen Center Drive. The site grew from half a building to roughly forty buildings on about a hundred acres. It remains the oldest and largest Amgen campus. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100 company still dates its founding to the 1980 filing and this valley.
