People treat Biogen as a Kendall Square campus that always sold multiple-sclerosis drugs from 225 Binney Street.
The first company was chartered in Geneva.
In 1978 Walter Gilbert of Harvard, Phillip Sharp of MIT, Charles Weissmann of Zurich, and Kenneth Murray of Edinburgh founded Biogen to take recombinant DNA out of university labs.
Major drug houses told Sharp the firm would not last a year.
The first U.S. rooms opened on Binney Street in 1982, on what Sharp later called a vacant lot at the edge of MIT.
Cambridge had passed the world's first local recombinant-DNA ordinance in 1976, so the warehouse needed a city licence before the work could start.
Weissmann's group contributed interferon alpha as the first product line.
The 2003 merger with IDEC Pharmaceuticals produced Biogen Idec; the name later shortened back to Biogen.
The mechanism was a licensed gene, not a purchased chemical library.
Stand on Binney Street and you are on the lot where Kendall Square's first large biotech book opened.
