People look for Intuit on Coast Avenue in Mountain View or in a TurboTax screen at midnight.
The first paid room sat here, a one-room office on Embarcadero Road in Palo Alto, in the autumn of 1983.
Scott Cook had watched his wife balance a checkbook at the kitchen table and hired Tom Proulx, a Stanford student who walked up at a campus demo. Cook took a home loan for the Embarcadero room. Quicken shipped in 1984. The pair later moved to University Avenue downtown.
Forty-six checkbook programs were already on the market. None of them worked well enough for ordinary households. That gap, not a new category, is what the first room was for.
Headquarters later settled at 2700 Coast Avenue in Mountain View. QuickBooks followed in 1992 because small firms were already misusing Quicken as a ledger.
Photograph Embarcadero as a street, not a private suite. The mechanism is ordinary: a borrowed kitchen table, then a rented room a home loan could cover.
