People treat Kubota as the Grand Green Osaka tower that always sold an orange tractor and a water pipe from a Kita-ku listing.
The first book was weights for a shop scale.
In February 1890 Gonshiro Ohde, nineteen, rented a corner of an old tenement at 23 Okurato-machi, Minami-ku, Osaka, now Nipponbashi in Chuo-ku. He dropped the floor of two rooms, about twenty-six square metres, set a cupola and a foot bellows, and opened Ohde Casting on about 100 yen in 1890 money.
The first wares were fittings and counterweights for balances.
In 1893 he began making cast-iron water pipe. In 1897 he took the Kubota name from an adoptive household and restyled the shop Kubota Iron Works. Domestic straight pipe was in production by 1900.
Farm engines followed in 1922. A tiller went on sale in 1947. The pipe shop became the tractor house the index still lists.
The mechanism is still the tenement one.
A city that was laying new mains needed pipe that did not have to be imported. A founder who already knew how to pour iron could sell the pipe before he sold a field machine.
A visitor in Nipponbashi walks a den-den electronics street. The tenement is gone. The cupola is gone.
The cupola is where the book started.
