Industry History | ADP — The Rooms Above a Paterson Ice-Cream Parlor
kevin
People treat ADP as a Roseland campus that always printed paychecks in the cloud.
The first office sat above an ice-cream parlor in Paterson.
In 1949 Henry Taub, then twenty-one and two years out of New York University, founded Automatic Payrolls with his brother Joseph.
A 1970 New York Times interview with Henry put the opening loan at 6,000 dollars in 1949 dollars and the first account at 20 dollars a week.
The Congressional Record reprint of his 2011 obituary places that first room over a Paterson ice-cream parlor, then in a hotel basement.
Frank Lautenberg, later a United States senator, met the brothers in the same Paterson building in 1952 and became a partner after selling insurance there.
Punched-card equipment arrived in 1957.
The name became Automatic Data Processing in 1958.
Oppenheimer took the firm public in 1961.
Contemporary accounts put the book then at about 300 clients, 125 employees, and roughly 400,000 dollars of revenue in 1961 dollars.
A Wall Street office for brokerage back-office work opened in 1962 and later became Broadridge.
Lautenberg served as chief executive until he entered the Senate in 1982.
The operating headquarters is One ADP Boulevard in Roseland.
Pin that campus from the public road.
The Paterson parlor rooms are gone.
What survived is a payroll shop that learned to run other companies' books before it owned a computer.
