People treat Applied Materials as a Santa Clara campus that arrived already selling tools to every major fab.
The first room was 750 square feet in Mountain View, rented month to month.
On 10 November 1967 Michael A. McNeilly incorporated the company after leaving Union Carbide's silicones work and a short-lived partner firm called Apogee Chemical. His father-in-law lent about 7,000 to 7,500 dollars. That sum paid the incorporation papers, the small Mountain View lease, and the commute from Marin County.
The product idea was equipment and silane chemistry for lower-temperature chemical vapor deposition on silicon. McNeilly had watched trichlorosilane move from Union Carbide to the polysilicon makers. He wanted the next step: tools that put films on wafers, not just the gas that fed the poly plants.
The first lasting plant was not the Mountain View room. After an early financing, the firm crossed into Santa Clara and took 15,000 to 18,000 square feet on San Ysidro Way, across from National Semiconductor. In 1974 it moved into the Bowers Avenue headquarters that still carries the legal address: 3050 Bowers Avenue.
James C. Morgan became chief executive in 1976 and pulled the company back from a scattered product list to semiconductor equipment. Applied listed on Nasdaq in 1972. In 1984 it opened a technology center in Japan, the first American toolmaker to do so under its own name.
This pin is the Bowers campus, the public face after 1974. The 1967 Mountain View lease is gone. Do not treat the present gate as the original 750-square-foot shop.
