People look for the first Disney studio in Burbank, or in an uncle's garage on Kingswell.
The first building the brothers put up for themselves stands here — or stood here — at 2719 Hyperion Avenue in Los Feliz, from January 1926.
Walt and Roy Disney paid a $400 deposit on the vacant lot on 6 July 1925 and finished the purchase in August. Construction of a 32-by-38-foot wood-frame studio began that mid-January. Two small offices, a camera room, and a partitioned floor for animators on one side and ink-and-paint on the other.
Oswald the Lucky Rabbit was drawn here. Plane Crazy was animated here in under three weeks. Steamboat Willie, Flowers and Trees, and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs were made on this block as the lot grew into a warren of annexes, a sound stage, and a Features Building.
The company moved to Burbank between late December 1939 and early January 1940. The Hyperion buildings were later razed. Gelson's Market occupies the ground. Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument No. 163 still marks the address. The supermarket is not the studio. The lot is.
