People treat Brown-Forman as a Louisville campus that always owned Jack Daniel's.
The first book was a bottled bourbon sold to pharmacies.
In 1870 George Garvin Brown, a twenty-four-year-old wholesale drug salesman born in Munfordville, partnered with his half-brother J. T. S. Brown Jr.
They put just over five thousand dollars into J. T. S. Brown and Brother and began selling Old Forester from 322 West Main Street.
Whiskey then moved in open barrels. Anyone along the chain could water or swap it.
Brown sealed the spirit in glass, signed the label, and sold it as a consistent medicinal product.
The brand was named for Dr. William Forrester, a Louisville physician. The second r was later dropped.
Early lots were batched from three nearby distilleries: Mattingly, Mellwood and Atherton.
The firm sat on Whiskey Row under changing letterheads, Brown-Chambers then Brown-Thompson, until George Forman, the bookkeeper, joined in 1890 and left his name on the door.
Forman died in 1901. Brown bought the stock. The company was incorporated in 1901 and bought the B. F. Mattingly Distillery the next year.
From 1882 to 1919 the brand lived at 119 West Main. Old Forester returned to that address as a working distillery in 2018.
During Prohibition, Brown-Forman was one of six Kentucky houses licensed to bottle whiskey for medicine.
The mechanism that survived is the 1870 seal: put the guarantee on the glass so the barrel can no longer lie.
