People treat Halliburton as a Houston and Dubai contractor that always arrived with a cement truck.
The first book was a wooden mixing box in southern Oklahoma.
In 1919 Erle P. Halliburton, then twenty-seven, founded the New Method Oil Well Cementing Company after work in the Burkburnett boom in North Texas.
He started in Duncan with a borrowed wagon, a team of mules, and a pump.
Vida Halliburton washed used cement sacks so they could be sold back to the mills.
The problem the method solved was water.
Shallow wells in the Healdton and Hewitt fields flooded as soon as the casing was set.
Cement squeezed between pipe and rock shut the water off so the well could produce oil instead of brine.
In 1920 the firm took the name Halliburton Oil Well Cementing Company and made Duncan its headquarters.
A 1921 patent covered the method and the means.
Halliburton later held thirty-eight oil-field patents, including the jet mixer that blended water and cement on a truck at the well.
The company incorporated in 1924 with producing companies as joint owners.
It did not list publicly until 1948.
Headquarters later left Duncan for Dallas and then Houston.
Duncan kept plants, a technology center, and a bronze of Erle in Memorial Park on U.S. 81.
The statue faces the road that carried the first mule wagon out to the Hewitt field.
