Consumer History | Kirin — The Brewery on the Slope Above Yamate
kevin
People treat Kirin as a Tokyo beverage group that was always a listed lager brand.
The first kettle sat on this Yokohama hillside.
On 21 July 1885, foreign residents in the Yamate settlement formed the Japan Brewery Company. William Henry Talbot of the Japan Gazette and the financier Edgar Abbott were among the organizers. Thomas Blake Glover later sat on the board.
The new firm took over buildings and land that had belonged to Spring Valley Brewery, the works William Copeland had opened on Yamate lot 123 in 1870.
In May 1888 Japan Brewery put a German-style lager on sale under the name Kirin Beer, through an exclusive contract with Meidi-ya.
In February 1907 a Japanese company, Kirin Brewery Co., Ltd., took over the assets and the brand.
The Yamate plant worked until September 1923, when the Great Kanto Earthquake brought the buildings down. Production moved to a new Yokohama factory at Namamugi in Tsurumi, completed in 1926.
The old slope is now Kirin-en Park, on the lane still called Biyazake-dori, Beer-and-Sake Street, between Harbor View Park and Motomachi.
A stone records that this was the site of Japan's first industrial brewery. The well used for brewing between 1895 and 1901 remains in the park.
The Nikkei 225 company still dates its founding to this 1885 filing and this hill above the harbour.
