People treat Kentucky Fried Chicken as a drive-through brand that arrived already wearing a white suit.
The recipe was cooked on this highway.
Harland Sanders moved to Corbin in 1930 and ran a Standard Oil service station on U.S. Route 25. He fed travelers in the living quarters behind the pumps.
In 1940 he opened a proper cafe across the road, at what is now 688 U.S. Route 25W in North Corbin. He operated that cafe until 1956. The pressure cooker and the eleven herbs and spices were worked out in this kitchen in the 1940s, while the motel rooms next door took the overnight trade from the highway.
The interstate later pulled traffic off Route 25. Sanders sold the Corbin operation and sold the method instead, as a franchise.
The cafe was added to the National Register of Historic Places on 7 August 1990. That fall it reopened as a museum, joined by a modern KFC kitchen on the old motel ground and a lobby that holds the smaller cases.
Yum! Brands, the S&P 500 parent that now owns KFC, still points the origin story at this cafe. The dining room is public. The highway is still in front of the door.
