Consumer History | Nongshim — Five Million Won and a Packet Called Lotte Ramyun
kevin
People treat Nongshim as a Dongjak listing at 112 Yeouidaebang-ro that always sold Shin Ramyun and a shrimp cracker from a seed-shaped logo.
The first book used another family's name.
On 18 September 1965 Shin Choon-ho founded Lotte Food Industrial Company in Seoul with capital of five million won.
He was the younger brother of Lotte founder Shin Kyuk-ho. The two businesses were separate from the start.
Shin had watched instant noodles boom in Japan and came home to make a Korean packet. Seven other ramyun houses were already on the shelf.
The first product was Lotte Ramyun, issued the same year. Research, not first-mover status, was the plan.
Beef Ramyun followed in 1970. Saeukkang, a shrimp snack, came in 1971. Nongshim Ramyun arrived in 1975.
By the mid-1970s the firm held about 35 percent of the domestic market. On 6 March 1978, after a dispute with his brother over the Lotte name on noodles, Choon-ho renamed the company Nongshim, farmer's heart.
The brothers did not reconcile. Shin Ramyun was developed in 1986 and became the house's main packet.
The present headquarters faces Yeouidaebang-ro in Dongjak-gu. The 1965 rooms were a Seoul industrial book, not this glass front.
The mechanism that remains is a second-mover noodle house that kept the recipe after it dropped the borrowed name.
