People treat DoorDash as a San Francisco listing at 303 Second Street that always sent a Dasher from a national logistics book.
The first book was a Stanford class project with a six-dollar fee.
In late 2012 Tony Xu and Evan Moore, then at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, walked Palo Alto restaurants asking what hurt. Delivery did.
They brought in undergraduates Andy Fang and Stanley Tang. The four put menus and a Google Voice number on PaloAltoDelivery.com. The first order was Thai food. Moore drove it himself.
The team incorporated as DoorDash in June 2013 and launched the consumer site on 21 June from a Palo Alto apartment whose furniture, Xu later wrote, cost less than two thousand dollars.
Y Combinator put in 120,000 dollars that summer for a 7 percent stake. The four founders ran the first hundred deliveries. There was no app, no Dasher map, and no city beyond Palo Alto.
A Stanford home game that September flooded the queue after 4 p.m. The mechanism is a student logistics desk that treated restaurant delivery as an unsolved local problem, then scaled the same pickup-and-drop loop across a continent.
The pin is University Avenue in Palo Alto, the street the first orders left, not the later SoMa tower.
