Health History | Intuitive Surgical — The Middlefield Rooms Where da Vinci Left the Lab
kevin
People treat Intuitive Surgical as a Sunnyvale campus on Kifer Road.
The first registered executive office was a building on West Middlefield Road in Mountain View.
In November 1995 John Freund, Frederic Moll, and Robert Younge incorporated Intuitive Surgical Devices, Inc. in Delaware.
Freund had taken an option on intellectual property from SRI International, whose console had been built to treat wounded soldiers at a distance.
Moll had tried to interest Guidant in the same work and been turned down.
The company's 1998 S-1 lists the principal executive offices at 1340 West Middlefield Road, Mountain View, California 94043.
That filing is the pin.
The first prototypes were named after Leonardo da Vinci.
Lenny came first.
Mona followed in 1997.
The commercial system kept the painter's name when Europe saw it in 1999 and when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration cleared it in 2000.
Intuitive later leased, then in 2004 bought, 950 Kifer Road in Sunnyvale.
The public campus now clusters at 1020 Kifer.
The mechanism is the one SRI never sold on its own: a surgeon sits at a console, a patient-side cart holds the instruments, and software filters tremor while scaling motion through ports a few millimetres wide.
Intuitive did not invent remote surgery.
It licensed the patents, raised money from Mayfield, Sierra Ventures, and Morgan Stanley, and stayed inside a few miles of Santa Clara County while the system moved from a Mountain View office into operating rooms.
The Middlefield building is an ordinary office from the public sidewalk.
It is where the paperwork and the first paid rooms sat while the robot was still a prototype with a painter's nickname.
