Finance History | New York Stock Exchange — The Marble House at 18 Broad Street
kevin
On 22 April 1903 the New York Stock Exchange opened a new house at 18 Broad Street.
George B. Post designed the Georgia-marble facade and the six Corinthian columns. John Quincy Adams Ward carved the pediment figures.
More than two thousand guests came to the dedication. Trading began the next day on a floor with no interior columns and one of the first large air-conditioning plants in an American office building.
The Exchange had occupied this block, with interruptions, since 1865. The 1903 house replaced a smaller building that could no longer hold the volume of listed stocks.
In 1922 Trowbridge and Livingston added the annex at 11 Wall Street, which still carries the Wall Street address most visitors use.
Intercontinental Exchange, the Atlanta firm that now owns the New York Stock Exchange, completed its purchase of NYSE Euronext on 13 November 2013.
The marble house stayed. The owner changed.
From the sidewalk on Broad Street the columns still read as the public face of the listed market. ICE is the S&P 500 company. The building is the place the market still uses for the opening bell.
