People treat Komatsu as a Tokyo ticker that competes with Caterpillar from a tower in Minato.
The first machines were built for a copper mine in Ishikawa.
In January 1917 Takeuchi Mining, run by Meitaro Takeuchi, opened Komatsu Iron Works beside the Yusenji copper mine in what was then Komatsu town, to make tools and mining gear in-house.
Hashimoto Masujiro of Kaishinsha, an early Japanese motor-car man, was the first director.
On 13 May 1921 the works were spun off from the mining parent as Komatsu Ltd., capital one million yen.
The town's name, written with the characters for small pine, became the company's name.
A 450-ton forming press went on sale in 1924. In 1931 the works produced Japan's first crawler farm tractor after a ministry request. The Awazu plant opened in 1938.
Headquarters left Komatsu for Tokyo in August 1951. The D50 bulldozer of 1947 and later dump trucks made the export book.
The original Komatsu factory closed in 2010. In May 2011 the company opened Komatsu no Mori, a public park and history hall, on that lot, a one-minute walk from JR Komatsu Station.
A 930E dump truck sits on the grounds. The historical hall is free.
The mechanism is vertical integration at a mine: when the parent could not buy reliable machines, it built a shop, then the shop outlived the mine.
Stand at Komatsu no Mori and you are on the factory footprint, not at the Shiodome offices that now file the accounts.
