Studio History | Warner Bros. — The Covered Stage at 5800 Sunset
kevin
People treat Warner Bros. as the Burbank lot behind the water tower.
The company that filed its trademark in 1923 first ran from a covered stage at 5800 Sunset Boulevard.
Harry, Albert, Sam and Jack Warner incorporated Warner Bros. Pictures on 4 April 1923. The Sunset lot, built in 1919 and acquired in the early 1920s, held a stage 350 feet long and 200 feet wide that contemporaries called the largest covered stage in the world.
The Jazz Singer was shot on this lot in 1927. Synchronized dialogue turned a mid-size studio into a company that could buy First National and move most production onto the 62-acre Burbank plant First National had opened in 1926.
Executive offices left Sunset for Burbank in 1930. The Hollywood lot stayed in use through the 1930s for pictures, phonograph recordings, and, from 1933 to 1955, the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies units.
A December 1934 fire on the Burbank lot forced the company back onto Sunset at full strength for a season. By 1937 Burbank was the headquarters that still stands at 4000 Warner Boulevard.
The mechanism was sound. A stage large enough to hide an orchestra and a microphone made the talkie possible before the company owned a valley campus.
The Sunset buildings survive as Sunset Bronson Studios. The pilgrimage pin is the original executive office block on the boulevard, not the later water tower.
