People treat AMD as a Santa Clara campus that arrived already named Ryzen.
The first building the company owned was here, at 901 Thompson Place in Sunnyvale, from September 1969.
Jerry Sanders and seven other Fairchild people incorporated Advanced Micro Devices on 1 May 1969 with $100,000. The first desk was in John Carey's living room. The next rooms were two offices behind a rug-cutting shop in Santa Clara. When the money for a line was raised, they took a 15,000-square-foot plant on Thompson Place — eight masks, 7-micron features, two-inch wafers. The building is not extant. The later One AMD Place campus swallowed the block.
The first chip that brought in cash was a 4-bit shift register in 1970. The promise that sold it was that every part, even the cheap ones, would be tested to MIL-STD-883 at AMD's expense. Lisa Su's company still prints from that decision. It is not the current Santa Clara tower. It is the first address the corporation manufactured from.
