Technology History | Kakao — Space Dot One on Cheomdan-ro, Jeju
kevin
People treat Kakao as a Seoul messenger that later bought a portal.
The registered headquarters is on Jeju.
Kim Beom-su left NHN in 2007 and built a smartphone messenger. KakaoTalk launched in March 2010. Daum Communications, the portal founded in 1995, merged with Kakao in October 2014. The surviving listed company kept Daum's Jeju domicile and took the Kakao name in 2015.
Space Dot One opened in 2012 at 242 Cheomdan-ro, in the Jeju Advanced Science and Technology Complex, with Hallasan behind it and the sea to the north. The building won a Red Dot award that year. Space Dot Two and Space Dot Kids followed on the same science-park ground in 2014.
The operating rooms that write code for KakaoTalk sit as much in Pangyo, at 166 Pangyoyeok-ro in Seongnam, as they do on this island. The legal pin is Jeju. The company put the headquarters here before the merger, and it has kept building on the Cheomdan-ro lots, including new office blocks announced for the first half of 2028 and a public park on the south side of Space Dot One.
The grounds and the glass facade are photographable from public paths. Interior tours have opened and closed with the years; the exterior does not require a pass.
Kakao Corporation, the KOSPI 200 name behind KakaoTalk, Daum, and the group payments and mobility companies, still lists this address as headquarters.
