Industry History | Mitsubishi Corporation — The Trading Desk Reassembled in Marunouchi
kevin
People treat Mitsubishi Corporation as a zaibatsu that never broke.
The listed company is a postwar reconstruction.
After 1945 GHQ ordered the old Mitsubishi Shoji dissolved.
The trading house split into more than a hundred successor firms.
Three of those firms later gathered as Fuji Shoji, Tokyo Boeki and Tozai Koei.
On 1 July 1954 the reconstituted Mitsubishi Corporation completed the so-called grand merger.
Mitsubishi Corporation's own history dates today's firm from that reconstruction, not from the 1870 Osaka shipping office.
The registered office is the Mitsubishi Shoji Building at 3-1 Marunouchi 2-chome.
The operating campus also uses the Marunouchi Park Building next door.
Both sit on land Yanosuke Iwasaki bought from the army in 1890 for 1.28 million yen in 1890 yen.
Mitsubishi Estate records that price as three times Tokyo's municipal budget that year.
The first modern office on the plot, Mitsubishi Ichigokan, opened in June 1894.
A reconstructed Ichigokan museum opened on the same block in 2010.
Pin the public face of the Mitsubishi Shoji and Park Building frontage.
Describe only what is visible from the Marunouchi sidewalk.
Tsukumo Shokai of 1870 is the group origin, not the listed parent.
What survived is a trading company rebuilt after a forced breakup, still sitting on the field Mitsubishi bought when the army was leaving.
