People treat Williams-Sonoma as a San Francisco listing that always sold catalog copper from a glass campus.
The first book was a hardware store rebuilt as a cookware shop.
Chuck Williams bought the Ralph Morse Hardware building at 605 Broadway in Sonoma after a 1953 trip through French kitchens and shops such as E. Dehillerin.
On 15 September 1956 he opened Williams-Sonoma in 628 square feet, with yellow walls and black-and-white tile he laid himself.
The Index-Tribune ad listed imported housewares, china, glass, gifts, and a gourmet shop.
Le Creuset and other French tools that American homes could not then buy off a hardware peg were the stock.
Customers from San Francisco followed the shop; in 1958 Williams closed Broadway and reopened at 576 Sutter Street.
Howard Lester bought the company in 1978 after seeing the Beverly Hills store.
The firm later recovered the Sonoma building and reopened it in 2014 as a working shop on the original lot.
The mechanism is still the Broadway one.
A home cook will pay for a pot a restaurant already uses if someone puts that pot on a small-town counter instead of behind a restaurant supply desk.
A visitor at 605 Broadway still stands in the shop that named the town in the brand.
The catalog outgrew the hardware store.
The hardware store is where the book started.
