People treat Kyocera as a Fushimi tower that always made semiconductors and phones.
The first payroll was twenty-eight people in a rented ceramics shop.
On 1 April 1959 Kyoto Ceramic Co., Ltd. opened with capital of 3 million yen. Kazuo Inamori, then twenty-seven and freshly out of a Shofu Industries lab, was a founding director and the technical lead. The first president was Otoya Miyaki of Miyaki Electric, who put up money and a roof.
The inauguration was held on the second floor of the factory in Nishinokyo Haramachi, Nakagyo-ku. The first product was a U-shaped ceramic insulator, later called Kelcima, for television picture tubes. The monthly target was two hundred thousand units.
Inamori's mechanism was process control on a material most Japanese electrical firms still imported. Fine ceramics held a tighter dielectric than porcelain. A small Kyoto shop that could hold that tolerance did not need a keiretsu sales desk.
Headquarters moved to Yamashina in July 1972. The present building at 6 Takeda Tobadono-cho, Fushimi-ku, opened in August 1998. Kisho Kurokawa and Takenaka designed a twenty-storey tower with a solar wall. The ground floors hold a free ceramics museum and a gallery. That is why this pin sits on the Fushimi lot, not on the vanished Haramachi floor.
