Industry History | Shin-Etsu — Lime Nitrogen Where Shinano Power Met Echigo Stone
kevin
People treat Shin-Etsu as a Marunouchi chemical tower that always made silicon wafers.
The first plant made fertilizer.
On 16 September 1926 Shinano Electric and Japan Nitrogen Fertilizer founded Shin-Etsu Nitrogen Fertilizer Co., Ltd.
The name joined Shinano water-power in Nagano with Echigo limestone in Niigata.
In 1927 the Naoetsu plant in what is now Joetsu began making carbide and lime nitrogen.
The company took the Shin-Etsu Chemical name in 1940.
Shares listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 1949.
The same Naoetsu lot later added silicones, chloromethanes, and semiconductor photoresists.
The works still stand at 28-1 Nishifukushima, Kubiki-ku, Joetsu.
Kuroi Station on the Shinetsu Line is the public approach, about a five-minute walk from the gate.
The listed company now reports from Marunouchi.
The founding chemistry is still on the Niigata lot that named the firm.
