People treat Intel as a Santa Clara campus that arrived already making the x86 microprocessor.
The first rooms the company occupied were here, in a conference room of the old Union Carbide building at 365 East Middlefield Road in Mountain View, from August 1968.
Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore had resigned from Fairchild that summer. They incorporated NM Electronics on 18 July 1968, then bought the name Intel from a hotel chain for $15,000 because Moore Noyce sounded like more noise. Arthur Rock raised the first capital. About a dozen engineers started in the conference room while Union Carbide finished moving out.
Moore wondered aloud whether they would ever need the whole building. They outgrew the thirty thousand square feet and opened Santa Clara in 1971. They left Middlefield Road in 1981.
The first product plan was semiconductor memory, not a microprocessor. The 4004 was still three years away. The building on East Middlefield is still standing. It is the first address that carried the Intel badge.
