Technology History | Dell — Room 2713 at Dobie Center

People treat Dell as a Round Rock campus that always built servers to order.
The first shop was a freshman dorm room.
On 3 May 1984 Michael Dell, then nineteen and enrolled as a pre-med student at the University of Texas at Austin, started PC's Limited from room 2713 in Dobie Center at 202 West 21st Street.
The product was not a new computer.
It was a kit: IBM-compatible boards and drives assembled to a buyer's specification and sold without a dealer.
A lawyer incorporated the firm as Dell Computer Corporation doing business as PC's Limited in return for a hard-drive upgrade, after Texas law required $1,000 of capital.
Dell later said the July 1984 statements showed about $198,000 in gross profit.
That figure was the argument he used with his parents to stay out of the fall semester.
In spring 1984 the inventory moved from Dobie to a taller-ceiling apartment at 32nd and Duval.
The Turbo PC, the first machine of Dell's own design, shipped in 1985.
The company went public in 1988 as Dell Computer Corporation.
The listed parent still files from One Dell Way in Round Rock.
The mechanism is the dorm-room one: cut the dealer out, build the box after the order, and keep the margin.
