Finance History | Nomura — The Securities Desk Spun Out on Azuchi-machi

People treat Nomura as a Nihonbashi and Otemachi house that was always a global broker.
The first filing was in Osaka.
On 25 December 1925, The Nomura Securities Co., Ltd. was registered as a spin-off from the securities department of Osaka Nomura Bank. The bank itself had been founded in 1918 by Tokushichi Nomura II on a Mitsui-style model, with capital of 10 million yen in 1918 currency.
Articles were drawn on 27 November 1925. The chosen name beat "Nomura Bond House."
Planned capital was 5 million yen in 1925 currency, in 100,000 shares. Half was paid in before the founding meeting.
The registered office was 2-61 Azuchi, Higashi-ku, Osaka, now Azuchi-machi in Chuo-ku.
The first book was bonds. Article 2 listed underwriting and distribution of public bonds, corporate bonds and stocks, and the buying and selling of public and corporate bonds.
Equity broking came later.
The parent bank's 1924 head office, the Sakaisuji Nomura Building, still stands a short walk from Azuchi-machi. That granite block later housed Daiwa Bank.
It is the nearest surviving face of the group in the year the securities firm was born.
In 2001 the listed name became Nomura Holdings. The present head office is 1-13-1 Nihonbashi, Chuo-ku, Tokyo.
The Nikkei 225 ticker is 8604.
The pin is Azuchi-machi 2-chome, the street of the 1925 register, not the later Tokyo tower. Accuracy is about fifty metres.
The 1925 rooms are gone. The separation is the fact: a bank securities desk was incorporated on its own so that underwriting would no longer sit inside a deposit-taking house.
