Consumer History | Colgate — The Soap and Candle Shop at 6 Dutch Street

People treat Colgate as a Park Avenue tower and a toothpaste tube that arrived already national.
The first shop sat here, on Dutch Street between Fulton and John in Lower Manhattan, in 1806.
William Colgate was twenty-three. He had left an apprenticeship at John Slidell's soap and candle house and taken a sub-lease at number 6 from a tenant of the Collegiate Dutch Reformed Church.
He slept above the boiling room, as the street's other merchants did. The stock was starch, laundry soap, and tallow candles in 1806 dollars, delivered to houses that still cooked and lit by fat.
A first newspaper advertisement ran in 1817. A starch works opened across the Hudson in Jersey City in 1820. Aromatic toothpaste in jars followed in 1873. The collapsible tube that later defined the brand arrived in 1896.
After William's death in 1857 the firm became Colgate and Company under his son Samuel. The 1928 merger with Palmolive-Peet produced Colgate-Palmolive-Peet. The present name dates from 1953. Shares listed on the New York Stock Exchange on 13 March 1930. Headquarters moved to 300 Park Avenue in 1956.
Number 6 is gone. Dutch Street is still a one-block cut between Nassau and William. The S&P 500 company that started as a one-man soap shop still prints the 1806 date on its letterhead.
