People treat Sysco as an Energy Corridor campus that always fed every restaurant chain.
The first company was nine frozen-food houses taped together.
On 19 March 1969 John F. Baugh, Herbert Irving and Harry Rosenthal incorporated Systems and Services Company in Houston.
Baugh had opened Zero Foods after the war, selling frozen packs out of Houston after years behind an A and P counter in Waco and Houston.
He spent the mid-1960s talking other National Frozen Food Association families into one book.
The eight that joined Zero Foods were Frost-Pack in Grand Rapids, Global Frozen Foods in New York, Houston's Food Service Company, Louisville Grocery, Plantation Foods in Miami, Texas Wholesale Grocery and Wicker in Dallas, and Thomas Foods in Cincinnati.
Combined sales at the merger were about $115 million in 1969 dollars.
The Houston operating company worked for nearly forty years from 535 Portwall Street, on the ship-channel side of town.
Fewer than fifteen people sat in the first downtown headquarters.
The first public offering came on 3 March 1970.
The first purchase after the listing was Arrow Foods.
The Portwall warehouse later passed to other uses; the Houston Food Bank now occupies the lot.
The operating company moved to Greens Crossing Boulevard in February 2010.
Corporate offices later sat at 1390 Enclave Parkway.
The mechanism that survived is the one Baugh sold the other families: one national book that could move any pack, in any region, to a kitchen that no longer cooked at home.
