People look for Lockheed Martin in a Bethesda tower or a Skunk Works hangar in Burbank.
The first shop that carried the family name sat here, in the William L. Rust garage on the northwest corner of State and Mason Streets in Santa Barbara, from 1916 to 1921.
Allan and Malcolm Loughead had formed the Alco Hydro-Aeroplane Company in San Francisco on 19 December 1912. They built the Model G in a garage at Pacific and Polk. After passenger flights at the Panama-Pacific Exposition they moved the work to Santa Barbara and organized Loughead Aircraft Manufacturing Company.
Jack Northrop, then twenty, drafted in that garage. The F-1 flying boat was framed in wood and Irish linen and took off from the beach east of Castillo Street.
The Santa Barbara firm was liquidated in 1921. Allan returned in 1926 with the spelling changed to Lockheed and built the Vega in Hollywood, then Burbank. Martin Marietta merged with Lockheed in 1995.
A plaque now sits at the bus stop on the west side of State just north of Mason. The first room was a rented garage on a street that still ran horses.
