People treat Regeneron as a finished Westchester campus that always made antibodies.
The first laboratory was an empty Union Carbide factory.
Leonard S. Schleifer, then an assistant professor of neurology at Cornell University Medical College, founded the company in 1988.
A later company chronology dates the incorporation to that year and names the first scientific hire as George D. Yancopoulos, who left Columbia in 1989.
A 2010 Reuters interview with Schleifer placed the earliest desk in a sublet staff apartment on Manhattan's Upper East Side at about 500 dollars a month in late-1980s dollars.
The same interview records the 1989 move into 15,000 square feet of the vacant Union Carbide plant in Tarrytown, where the first laboratories were built.
The name came from neurotrophic factors and nerve regeneration, the first research line.
NASDAQ listed the shares in 1991.
The company's own history puts the IPO proceeds at 91.6 million dollars in 1991 dollars.
P. Roy Vagelos became chairman in 1995.
The operating headquarters is now 777 Old Saw Mill River Road on the Eastview campus.
